The question of accommodation for a woman and her children is a major factor in making decisions about what to do about domestic violence. It is common for service providers to underestimate how much the idea of losing one's home, or of a home not being safe, impacts upon a woman's choices. While going into refuge may be the best temporary option, it will mean leaving behind home, community, schools, pets and family network. For this reason, it is important to explore other options as well as refuge. Making choices about accommodation may mean making choices about eduction, finances, work, health and welfare.
We can provide help and support about the kind of choices available in regard to temporary and permanent accommodation, and the legal position for a person who is not safe in their home because of domestic violence.
In a study by Shelter, 40% of all homeless women said that domestic violence was a contributing factor to their homelessness. Domestic violence was found to be the 'single most quoted reason for becoming homeless' (Shelter, 2002).
